Islam is a religion of peace, protection, and belief. It began with the command to obey Allah, and sacrifice holds a central place in its teachings. One of the most profound examples of sacrifice in Islam is associated with the Islamic month of Muharram, which carries the great sacrifice of the family of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The 10th of Muharram, known as "Ashura," is a significant day in Islamic history. This day is even mentioned in the Quran, and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) observed fasting on Ashura, making it the most important fast after those in Ramadan. It is narrated in *Sahih Muslim*:
Muharram teaches us sacrifice and prosperity through the great martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A), who exemplified how to live a righteous life according to Islamic principles. Despite the immense trials he faced, including losing 70 of his loved ones in the Battle of Karbala, Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) remained steadfast in his worship and commitment to Allah. Even when surrounded by enemies, he continued to offer his prayers, showing unshakable faith until his last moments.
We must learn from the sacrifice, devotion, and perseverance demonstrated by the family of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) during Muharram. Unfortunately, many of us today have forgotten the essence of our faith. While we read the Quran, it is often treated as a formality. Prayers are offered for personal satisfaction rather than as acts of sincere devotion. Although we believe in the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), we fail to follow his teachings.
This is one of the reasons Muslims are facing challenges in the modern world. We must rise again with the spirit of true Muslims, demonstrating our commitment to Islamic values and standing firm against anything that goes against them. The sacrifices of Muharram remind us of our strength and the importance of staying true to our faith.
May Allah guide us on the right path, give us the strength to follow the message of Muharram, and help us respect its significance. Ameen.
