The Islamic Perspective on Protecting the Earth

The mosque is a significant and sacred place for Muslims. Similarly, the Earth, the planet on which we live, holds immense importance. As stewards of this planet, it is our responsibility to protect it from harm, distortion, and destruction. Islam, as a comprehensive way of life, has emphasized this matter profoundly.

In the Quran, Allah mentions:

“Corruption has appeared on the land and in the sea because of what the hands of humans have wrought. This is in order that We give them a taste of the consequences of their misdeeds, that perhaps they will return to the path of right guidance.”

Scholars interpret the first word, "corruption," as a reference to pollution. Renowned scholar Imam Zaid Shakir explained that early commentators of the Quran described this corruption in ecological terms, such as the drying up of rains and the dissipation of ocean harvests.

Climate Change

Islam delivers a clear message to humanity: our actions, greed, and misdeeds can lead to the destruction of the planet we inhabit. No other faith has such a detailed and proactive approach to environmental stewardship.

Planting Trees

Islam acknowledges the inevitability of environmental degradation and encourages proactive solutions. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

"If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, a person, or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift (Sadaqah) for him." - (Bukhari)

Furthermore, the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) stated, "Plant a tree, even if it is your last deed."

Conservation of Resources

Conservation is a fundamental principle in Islam. Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him) emphasized this when he saw his companion Saad performing ablution near a river. The Prophet remarked:

"Saad, what is this squandering?"
Saad replied, "Can there be squandering in ablution?"
The Prophet said, "Yes, even if you are by the side of a flowing river." (Ibn Majah)

This Hadith underscores the importance of conserving resources, even in situations where abundance is apparent.

Recycling and Repairing Items

Recycling is beneficial, but repairing and reusing items is even more economical and eco-friendly. Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) demonstrated this through his actions. Aisha (RA) narrated that the Prophet used to repair his own shoes, mend torn clothes with leather patches, and assist in household chores.

Protecting Wildlife

Animals play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. In Islam, it is obligatory to take care of animals, rescue strays, and provide them with shelter. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

"There is a reward for serving any living being." - (Bukhari)

This Hadith was narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA), whose name translates to "Father of Kittens," reflecting his dedication to caring for cats and other animals.
