Childhood of Prophet Mohammed

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was born to Aamina, the daughter of Wahab, and Abdullah, the son of Abdul Muttalib, belonging to the noble family of Bani Hashim from the Quresh tribe. His father passed away two months before his birth, leaving him an orphan. However, his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, took him under his care and raised him with great love and affection. Initially, his mother named him “Ahmed,” but his grandfather named him “Mohammed” (Peace Be Upon Him).

As per the custom of the Arabs, the young Prophet (PBUH) was sent to live in a village with a noble foster mother, Halima Saadia of Saa’d bin Bakr. Under her care, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was blessed by Allah SWT, and she regarded him as very special. In the healthy environment of the desert village, he stayed for five years, learning the pure Arabic language of the desert. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) held his foster mother in great esteem and love.

At the age of five, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was returned to his mother, Aamina. During a visit to Medina to pay respects to the grave of her husband, Abdullah, Aamina passed away at a place called Abwa on the return journey to Makkah. This left Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) orphaned once again, and his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, took him under his care. Abdul Muttalib loved the Prophet (PBUH) dearly, as he reminded him of his son, Abdullah, and always made sure that he never felt unwanted or unloved.

However, when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was only eight years old, his grandfather Abdul Muttalib also passed away. The loss of his grandfather was a deeply sorrowful moment for the young Prophet (PBUH), who mourned his death, crying until he reached the edge of his grave. Before his death, Abdul Muttalib entrusted the care of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to his son, Abu Talib (the Prophet's uncle). Abu Talib took this responsibility with great devotion, ensuring that the Prophet (PBUH) felt loved and cared for, and treated him like his own son.

Abu Talib's wife, Fatima bint-e-Asad, also loved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) dearly, and he considered her a mother figure in his life. When Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was twelve years old, he accompanied his uncle Abu Talib on a trade journey to Syria. During their stop at Busra al-Sham, an old Christian monk named Bahira observed the young boy and tested him with several questions. After his observations, Bahira recognized Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as the Last Prophet, mentioned in the unaltered Gospels, and said to Abu Talib:

"This child is destined for greatness," he said. "Take him back to your country and look after him well."

Though Abu Talib did not share this event with anyone, he kept a close watch over his nephew and continued to care for him as he grew. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was loved and cherished by all in Abu Talib's household. As he matured, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stayed away from the idolatrous practices of Makkah and was known for his strong moral character. His upbringing in the loving care of Abu Talib and Fatima bint-e-Asad played a significant role in shaping the character of the Prophet (PBUH) who would later lead and guide humanity.
